What can you do to help?

Long Island Shetland Sheepdog Rescue is a group of a few dedicated workers whose only payment is the knowledge that a needy Sheltie has been helped by their efforts.  Everyone is a volunteer.  However, caring for dogs costs money; if we are to continue our much needed work, we need the support of our membership.  Financial support provides the medical attention our Shelties need, including shots, heartworm maintenance, and neutering.  Often, the vet fees can outweigh the fees charged for the Sheltie.  Your contribution also provides a means to continue our efforts through publications, events, and media.  We are always seeking biscuits, bones, toys, dog beds, dog food, shampoo, brushes, flea collars, leashes, and any other items a Sheltie would enjoy.  If you prefer, we will gladly accept donations by check earmarked “Dog Supplies.”

We are also continually in need of foster homes, transportation, and public relations.  Occasionally, we have more dogs than we do potential new homes or foster homes.  We rely on foster homes to provide us with the dog’s personality and character.  The foster home provides insights that the turn-in form often cannot.  Foster homes can also provide training and grooming to prepare the dog for its eventual new home.  Being a foster home reaps its own rewards as well.  You get to know the Sheltie and know that you’re helping this dog get a new “leash” on life.  You often gain new friends in your life, too.

We know many people are unable to provide a temporary or permanent home, but their services can still be utilized.  We sometimes need people to pick up and drop off dogs from their point of origin to their new foster home or maybe just one leg of the trip in between.  This often requires little more than a couple hours of time, a gallon or two of gas, and space for the dog to enjoy the ride.  We also appreciate the efforts of those who can distribute literature to local shelters, veterinary hospitals, and pet supply shops.  Often, we have promotional events and ask volunteers to monitor the booth for a short time.  There is a myriad of ways one can provide assistance to LISSR and every little bit helps.  If you don’t think your contribution can matter, just look in the eyes and at the wagging tail of the last Sheltie we placed.
