Long Island Shetland Sheepdog Rescue is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization comprised solely of volunteers dedicated to caring for and placing abused, neglected and abandoned Shetland Sheepdogs into permanent and loving homes. We also provide services to owners who can no longer care for their Shelties. It is our mission to provide veterinary care and a loving forever home to any Sheltie in need. Whether homeless, injured, sick, puppy, or senior citizen—all Shetland Sheepdogs have a place at LISSR.
LISSR rescues Shelties that have been abandoned in animal shelters or are given up by their owners. Some of these dogs have been abused or neglected, yet they still have that wonderful Sheltie character. Click here to find out more about Sheltie personality: American Shetland Sheepdog Association.
Whenever possible, our rescue Shelties are fostered in our homes. This allows us to evaluate their temperments in order to place them in the proper permanent home. This also enables you to see the dog in a natural environment and helps you make an educated decision on a life-long companion. LISSR is not a shelter; therefore, dogs are seen in foster homes by appointment only.
LISSR believes there is a home out there for every homeless Sheltie. Do you have room in your heart and your home for one?
